7 things to do after you find a mentor
1. Set a Goal - What do you need help with?
2. Remember that your relationship with your mentor is not just a transaction, it's a personal relationship. So take your time to get to know them and they'll get to know you.
3. Meet regularly - This can help you create a feeling of accountability and make sure you are on the right path.
4. Make the responsibility of your mentor as easy as possible. Come prepared with what you want to discuss, and keep the meeting relaxed and comfortable.
5. Don't forget to update them often by email, phone call, meeting or whatever works best.
6. Be honest about what you want to learn. Holding back will hold you back.
7. Accept constructive criticism. It's important for your professional growth and your mentor is expected to provide it to you.
How to get the most out of being a mentor
1. Understand your mentee's greatest need - Really engage with your mentee, understand what their strengths are and what their weaknesses are, but more importantly what's their greatest need.
2. Expose your mentee - Expose them to connections that might be useful to them personally or professionally outside of your organization.
3. Learn from your mentee - Consider the intellectual or experiential exchange you may have that as a mentor you gain from the relationship.
"Own your own greatness. Lead, empower diverse leaders for positive change."
